British Grand Prix 2008
Built in 1931 the world-renown Donington Park hosted only eight years of motorcycle racing before it was closed during World War II and lay in disrepair for 40 years. When Tom Wheatcroft privately funded the resurrection of the circuit in 1977 nobody believed him when he told them he’d bring racing back to Donington.
Now deservedly the heart of British motor racing after defying the critics, Donington has retained much of the old spirit that brought motorcycles to the original 1.957-mile track. This track has it all, including the notorious combination of Craner Curves-into-Old Hairpin and two screaming straights known as Wheatcroft and Starkey’s, both separated by the 180-degree Melbourne Loop which was included in 1985 to increase the length to 2.5 miles in order to meet official motorcycle GP circuit length requirements. Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa have both taken 25 MotoGP winning points here in the last two years and 2007 saw Casey take the flag (a delighted Colin Edwards 2nd!) Most spectators will be viewing with general tickets which provide good overall viewing, assisted by large TV screens. Grandstand capacity is limited and early purchase is recommended for fans who want to overlook the start-finish grid or the exciting first corner at Redgate. It has to be said, Donington is not the most comfortable of circuits - something we have addressed head on with TWO hospitality units to escape the hordes (and the rain). Choose the MotoGP VIP Village for the top corporate experience with pit walks and more. Our Pole Position Club on Goddard (last corner) with private paddock and pit tours is for the serious aficionado. Donington itself is undergoing refurbishment, we are really looking forward to it! Our packages here are some of the best we do - our 'superior' package is set at the Airport Thistle Hotel, where you will rub shoulders with many teams and riders. Best of all, we were in and out in less than 20 minutes last year! And new this year we have secured the finest hotel in the region for a sublime weekend experience just in Castle Donington in a stunning setting: who'd have thought, Donington a place you won't want to leave! Our opening party last year was legendary - we sponsored the backstage for the rock concert, where our guests exclusively hung out (indeed, many were ON stage!) meeting James Toseland and the others for a truly memorable experience! And if we don't see our sponsored British 125cc rider Danny Webb on the podium, he will certainly pay us a visit in our hospitality unit or opening party! |
