Our fan-favourite WorldSBK tour has now moved to spring! Portimao is one of the most loveliest destinations on the calendar, bringing together the best of both worlds - ultra-relaxing beach days with nonstop on-track action!
My oh my - World SBK enters Europe like a tornado!
Portimao is traditionally our top SBK event - and this year again shows why!
Our based hotel - the sublime Villa Mariazinha in the heart of Portimao continues to delight. Thursday we had our traditional happy hour in the local Irish bar. Friday we walk to a brilliant local Portugese restaurant just off the tourist precint and we are joined by our sponsored SSP300 rider, Carter Thompson. Saturday and Sunday we staked out our quiet stylish cocktail bar Feu across the street to watch the MotoGP Sprint and main races. A perfect all-moto weekend!
Apart from the cool tour package, the action was all at the track as we were treated to 3 days of thrilling racing -- 9 races in all! Furthermore, as the first European round we got to experience all the new and updated products first hand.
First - and foremost!? - was our partner team formerly Kawasaki factory racing, now sporting Bimota! What an awesome bike and an iconic brand! All new livery and upgrades to the merchandise, hospitality and the general experience, we are looking forward to welcoming Bimota fans all year!
Saturday we were treated to an exclusive unveiling of the brand new adventure bike - the Bimota Terra. A new object of lust for us!
The SBK VIP Pit Lounge was amazing. Apart from the usual superb positioning and great food, they have added a brilliant coffee area with selected espressos and top machines. New experiences enjoyed by our guests included tours of the timing room, control centre and even places on the start grid (including a SBK race!)
Finally, this even saw the introduction of the new SBK Garage hospitality. This ticket grants 3 day paddock access and use of the unit for food, beer, soft drinks and a brilliant chill area with large TV, Positioned ust across from the SBK Paddock show, the location could not be better. And the beer - the best in the circuit - is a superb Italian estatecraft beer Baladin -- we were delighted to see it there!
Every race was stunning, climaxing with two race-long superbike duels between Bulega and Razgatlioglu. In Supersport we were delighted that our former Moto2 colleague Bo Bendsneyder took a podium then a win! Even the Yamaha BluCru races were thrilling as the kids lined up 8 abreast to take a corner and produced two finish line melees! We were especially impressed with young American Chris Clark, taking a 1st and 3rd!
Finally our sponsored SSP rider Aussie Carter Thompson qualified P2, took 6th in the 1st race, and went from 15th to 2nd in the second race, but beaten in the final sector to end up a very respectable 4th. Given this is his first full year, not bad! Looking to see more of him in SSP300 as well as the Red Bull Rookies
We are so happy - and lucky! - to be able to come to this wonderful destination twice in the year -- bring on the MotoGP!
And if this event is anything to go by, SBK promises to be a stunning season!
